How to use this calculator#

  1. Copy the weights straight from the syllabusEvery course publishes them: homework 20%, quizzes 30%, final 50%. Guessing the weights is the fastest way to a wrong answer, because a category worth half the grade behaves completely differently from one worth a tenth.
  2. Enter each category as a single percentageAverage the assignments inside a category first — five homework scores become one homework percentage. If your instructor drops the lowest score, drop it before averaging, not after.
  3. Let the weights fall short mid-termIf only 60% of the course has been graded, enter just those categories. Dividing by the actual total weight tells you where you stand on completed work rather than pretending the ungraded half is a zero.
  4. Switch to Final exam mode before the exam, not afterThe required score tells you whether your target is reachable while you can still do something about it. A result above 100% means it is not, and that is worth knowing in week ten rather than week fifteen.

The formula#

The two formulas are the same equation. Target = Current × (1 − W) + Required × W simply says the final grade is the weighted blend of what you have and what you score; solving it for Required gives the second expression. A required score above 100 means the target is unreachable at that weight; a negative one means the target is already secured even with a zero.

Working out a weighted course grade#

Multiply each category score by its weight, add the products together, then divide by the total weight. Homework at 92% counting 20%, quizzes at 85% counting 30% and a final at 78% counting 50% gives 18.4 + 25.5 + 39.0 = 82.9%. If your weights do not add up to 100% because the term is not finished, dividing by the actual total shows where you stand on the work graded so far.

Finding the score you need on the final#

Rearrange the same formula: Required = (Target − Current × (1 − W)) ÷ W, where W is the final exam's weight written as a decimal. Walking in with 84%, a final worth 30% and a 90% target, you need (90 − 84 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 104%, which is out of reach without extra credit. Run this calculation before the exam rather than after it.

When the required score comes back impossible#

A required score above 100% means your target is unreachable at that exam weight; a negative required score means the grade is already locked in even if you score zero. Both answers are useful. If the number is unreachable, work backwards to the best grade still attainable, and ask about extra credit or a dropped lowest score while there is still time.

Worked examples#

A four-category weighted course grade

Homework 92% (15%), quizzes 85% (20%), midterm 79% (25%), final 88% (40%).

  1. Homework: 92 × 0.15 = 13.80
  2. Quizzes: 85 × 0.20 = 17.00
  3. Midterm: 79 × 0.25 = 19.75
  4. Final: 88 × 0.40 = 35.20
  5. Total = 13.80 + 17.00 + 19.75 + 35.20 = 85.75
  6. Weights sum to 1.00, so no further division is needed

85.75% — a B on a standard 10-point scale, and 0.25 short of an 86 if the instructor rounds at whole numbers.

What you need on the final

You walk in with 84%. The final is worth 30% of the course.

  1. For a 90% target: (90 − 84 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30
  2. 84 × 0.70 = 58.8, so (90 − 58.8) ÷ 0.30 = 31.2 ÷ 0.30 = 104%
  3. For an 85% target: (85 − 58.8) ÷ 0.30 = 26.2 ÷ 0.30 = 87.33%
  4. For an 80% target: (80 − 58.8) ÷ 0.30 = 21.2 ÷ 0.30 = 70.67%

90% is out of reach without extra credit; 85% needs 87.33% on the final; 80% needs only 70.67%. Knowing all three changes how you spend revision time.

Before the final, only the first three rows exist: 13.80 + 17.00 + 19.75 = 50.55 points against weights totalling 60%. The grade on graded work is 50.55 ÷ 0.60 = 84.25%, not 50.55%.

Notice the direction flips. If you are behind, a heavier final helps you; if you are ahead, a heavier final is a risk, because more of your locked-in grade is up for renegotiation.

Never assume 89.5% rounds to an A−. Many gradebooks truncate rather than round, and the syllabus is the only authority on which.

Common mistakes#

  • Averaging the category percentages equallyScores of 92, 85 and 78 average to 85.0, but weighted at 20%, 30% and 50% they come to 82.9. The gap is 2.1 points, which is the difference between a B and a B− at many cutoffs. The heaviest category always dominates.
  • Mixing a points-based course into a weighted formulaSome courses total raw points — 850 out of 1,000 — rather than weighting categories. In those, an assignment's influence is its point value, and running the weighted formula over category percentages gives a number the gradebook will never show.
  • Forgetting a dropped lowest scoreIf the syllabus drops your worst quiz, remove it before averaging the category. Leaving it in understates that category, and because quizzes are often 20–30% of a course, the error carries straight through to the final grade.
  • Treating a required score above 100% as a rounding problem104% on the final is not achievable through effort; it is a signal to recalculate against a realistic target, ask about extra credit, or check whether a resubmission policy exists. Working out the best grade still attainable is more useful than aiming at an impossible one.

Frequently asked questions#

How do I calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each score by its weight as a decimal, add the results, then divide by the sum of the weights. With weights totalling 100%, that division leaves the number unchanged.

What score do I need on my final exam?

Use Required = (Target − Current × (1 − W)) ÷ W, where W is the final's weight as a decimal and Current is your grade going in.

What if my category weights don't add up to 100%?

That is normal mid-term. The calculator divides by the actual total weight, giving your grade on the work completed so far rather than an artificially low number.

How do I convert a percentage to a letter grade?

A common scale is 90–100 = A, 80–89 = B, 70–79 = C, 60–69 = D and below 60 = F, though many instructors shift the cutoffs or curve the results.

Key terms#

Weight
The share of the final grade a category is worth, published in the syllabus. Enter it as a percentage or a decimal, but never mix the two.
Weighted average
Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight). Reduces to a plain average only when every weight is equal.
Category
A group of assessments sharing one weight — homework, quizzes, labs, participation, exams.
Points-based grading
A scheme where every assignment contributes raw points to a course total. Influence comes from point value, not from a declared weight.
Curve
An adjustment applied to the whole class after grading — a flat addition, a rescaling to a target mean, or a rank-based distribution. It changes the cutoffs, not your weighted score.
Target grade
The final course percentage you are aiming for, and the input that turns the weighted formula into a required-score calculation.
