How to use this calculator#
- Pick the target date or a preset holidayFixed-date holidays like Christmas and Halloween land on the same calendar date each year but a different weekday, which is why the tool reports the weekday alongside the count.
- Read the day count for short horizonsUnder a few months, days are the unit people actually plan in. ‘118 days’ tells you something ‘about four months’ does not, especially when the deadline is fixed.
- Switch to years-months-days for long ones‘1 year, 4 months and 12 days’ is far easier to reason about than 499 days once the horizon passes a year. Both come from the same underlying count.
- Work backwards from the target to find your real deadlinesIf invitations have to go out ten weeks ahead of a date 118 days away, you have 48 days of slack. Converting a vague deadline into a day count is what exposes whether a plan is comfortable or already late.
The formula#
Midnight-to-midnight countdown
Days remaining = ordinal(Target) − ordinal(Today) • Weeks = ⌊Days ÷ 7⌋, loose days = Days mod 7
- Today
- The current calendar date in your own time zone, with the time of day ignored
- Target
- The date you are counting down to
- ordinal(d)
- A serial day number for date d; only the difference between two of them matters
- Days remaining
- Whole days still to pass. Today gives 0, tomorrow gives 1
- Weeks
- Whole weeks in the remaining days, with the remainder shown as loose days
The count is exclusive of today and inclusive of the target's arrival: it measures midnight boundaries still to be crossed, so it does not drift as the clock moves through the day. Leap days inside the range are counted automatically because the arithmetic runs on real calendar dates — a countdown crossing 29 February 2028 is one day longer than the same window in 2027. A year is a leap year when it is divisible by 4, unless it is a century year not divisible by 400.
How the countdown is counted#
The countdown measures whole days from midnight today to midnight on your target date, so a date tomorrow returns 1 rather than a fractional value. If you pick today itself the answer is zero days, because no midnight boundary has been crossed yet. This midnight-to-midnight method is what almost every event countdown uses, and it never drifts when the clock hits noon.
Weeks are the day count divided by seven and rounded down, so 20 days shows as 2 whole weeks with 6 days spare. The months figure counts complete calendar months rather than 30-day blocks: from 5 March to 5 June is exactly 3 months even though those months hold 92 days between them. Both views come from the same underlying day count.
Leap years, holidays and dates in the past#
Because the count works on real calendar dates, a 29 February inside your range is added automatically. A countdown running from 1 January 2028 to 1 March 2028 therefore returns 60 days, not 59, since 2028 is a leap year. Years divisible by 100 are not leap years unless they are also divisible by 400 — 2100 will be a common year.
Fixed holidays like Christmas, Halloween and New Year’s Day fall on the same calendar date each year but shift weekday, which is why the tool also shows the weekday your target lands on. If your date has already passed, the result flips to show how long ago it was instead of returning a negative number.
Using a countdown for planning#
Countdowns are most useful when you work backwards. If a wedding is 118 days away and invitations should post 10 weeks ahead, you have 48 days of slack before that milestone becomes urgent. Turning a vague deadline into a concrete day count exposes whether a plan is comfortable or already tight.
The years-months-days breakdown suits long horizons where a raw number stops meaning much. Knowing a lease ends in 1 year, 4 months and 12 days is easier to reason about than 499 days, while the day total is better for short spans and for splitting work evenly across the time you have left.
Worked examples#
Counting down to Christmas
How many days from 4 August 2026 to 25 December 2026?
- Day-of-year, 4 August = 212 + 4 = 216
- Day-of-year, 25 December = 334 + 25 = 359
- 359 − 216 = 143 days
- 143 ÷ 7 = 20 weeks with 3 days left over
- Calendar view: 4 Aug → 4 Dec is 4 whole months, then 21 more days
143 days — 20 weeks 3 days, or 4 months 21 days. Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday.
A countdown that crosses a leap day
1 January to 1 March, counted in 2028 and in 2027.
- 2028: January contributes 31 days, February 29
- 31 + 29 = 60 days
- 2027: February has only 28, so 31 + 28 = 59 days
- 2028 is divisible by 4 and is not a century year, so 29 February exists
60 days in 2028 against 59 in 2027 — one extra day, from one extra date on the calendar.

A fixed date moves forward one weekday each year, and two whenever a 29 February falls between the two occurrences. Every date here shifts by exactly one from 2026 to 2027. Going into 2028, New Year's Day and Valentine's Day shift by one, while 4 July, Halloween, Christmas and New Year's Eve shift by two — 29 February 2028 sits inside their span.

The 52 weeks 1 day row is why your birthday advances one weekday a year. In a leap year it is 52 weeks 2 days, which is the extra shift.
Common mistakes#
- Counting today as one of the days leftIf an exam is tomorrow, there is one day until it, not two. Counting today as remaining is the classic ‘sleeps’ off-by-one, and it flips a same-day deadline from 0 to 1 — the difference between having time and having none.
- Assuming the weekday repeats every yearA fixed date advances one weekday a year, and two whenever a 29 February falls between the two occurrences. A wedding venue booked for a Saturday date will not be a Saturday next year, and outdoor events planned around weekends have to be re-checked annually.
- Converting to months by dividing by 30143 ÷ 30 = 4.8 months, but the calendar answer is 4 months and 21 days. Seven months of the year have 31 days, so dividing by 30 systematically overstates how many whole months remain.
- Letting the browser's time zone move the dateA countdown that computes ‘today’ in UTC while displaying it locally can be a full day out either side of midnight. The count should always be built from the local calendar date, not from a timestamp.
Frequently asked questions#
Does the count include today or the target date?
Neither is double-counted. The result is the number of full days that must pass before your target date arrives, so a date tomorrow shows 1 day and today shows 0.
What happens if I choose a date in the past?
The tool detects the reversed range and tells you how long ago the date was instead of showing a negative count.
Are leap days included?
Yes. The calculation runs on actual calendar dates, so any 29 February between today and your target is counted automatically.
Why does the month count look lower than days divided by 30?
Months are counted as complete calendar months, and most months have 31 days. Dividing by 30 slightly overstates the number of full months remaining.
